Simone Biles' Revered Signature Move Was Once A Back-Up Plan

Team USA phenomenon Simone Biles is basking in her success after taking gold at the 2016 Olympic Games. With the most gold medals in world gymnastics championship history checked off her list of accomplishments, the trailblazing gymnast’s success is anything but accidental.

The Biles, on the other hand, was largely unplanned. Biles’ signature move, which she dubs a “double lay half out,” entered the International Federation of Gymnastics’ Code of Points in 2013 when she became the first gymnast to complete the motion in a world competition.

What fans may not know is Biles’ coach Aimee Boorman designed the move for her mentee due to a calf muscle injury. Boorman and Martha Karolyi, USA Gymnastics national team coordinator, were unsure if Simone could complete the tricky move, but she boosted their faith by landing it 95 percent of the time.

Three years later, the humble medalist is still adjusting to the worldwide nod to The Biles. “It’s kind of weird, because every time I do it I say, ‘Oh I’m going to do a double lay half out,’ I never say, ‘oh, I’m going to go do The Biles,'” she told USA Gymnastics.
